Fasting – Matthew 6:16-18

Book: Matthew

Matthew 6:16-18
Fasting
16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Sermon Notes:

  • Worldly motivation for fasting stems from and leads to self-gratification and its reward is transient.
  • Godly motivation arises out of a heart that desires to honor, glorify, and draw near to God and its reward is eternal.
  • Fasting is the voluntarily abstinence from anything that is legitimate in and of itself, for the sake of seeking God’s will and direction, and deepening your dependence on and relationship with him.
  • Is the Lord calling me to fast?
