Sermon Notes –
Proverbs 3: 5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
Rely, Relinquish, Refocus, Rest
- Rely on the Lord
- Consciously consider that the Lord is worthy of our trust
- How would you defend the trustworthiness of God?
- His character – Psalms
- His plans – Jeremiah 29:11
- His purposes – Roman’s 8:28
- His promises – 2 Corinthians 1:20
- His provisions – Philippians
- Solomon calls God “Yahweh” or “Jehovah” in this passage which is God’s covenant-making and keeping name.
- If you have anxiety, God is a chain breaker. – Philippians 4:6 – Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
- Trusting with your heart is more than head knowledge.
- Mark 9: 23-24 ~ I believe but help me in my unbelief.
- Relinquish your need for control
- Who am I to think I can write a better story?
- Isaiah 55:8 – For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
- Refocus your heart – to truly know his will and then submit
- 1 Corinthians 10:31 – So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
- James 1:2 – You can “count it all joy when you face trials of many kinds,” and 1 Peter 1:6 says, “you greatly rejoice [when] grieved by various trials.”
- Rest in his care
- Matthew 11:28 – Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. -A promise of his direction and care
- Wide godly living leads to the applause of heaven.
- This does not mean that your path will be devoid of problems/obstacles/detours
- If you can have the 3 r’s above (Rely, Relinquish, Refocus), you can be confident. Confident that He will go ahead of you on your path.
- Hebrews 12:1 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
- God is sovereign over your paths whether you can see or feel his hands.
- Job 23:8 – Behold, I go forward, but he is not there, and backward, but I do not perceive him; on the left hand when he is working, I do not behold him; he turns to the right hand, but I do not see him. But he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.
- What is your “trust quotient” today? What will it take?
- Begins with a relationship with God and a need for a Savior.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
Rely on the Lord
Lean not on your own understanding
Relinquish your need to control
Refocus your heart on Him and His word and he will direct your paths
Rest in His care
Rest in his goodness
Simple but not simplistic
